HOLLYWOOD – Pacquiao Manny can go 12 rounds, even more if possibly needed, against Antonio Margarito, and not feel a thing.
“Hindi na napapagod (He doesn’t tire anymore),” said one of Pacquiao’s ring assistants, Nonoy Neri, at the Wild Card Gym Friday.
Pacquiao hit the mitts with Freddie Roach for 13 rounds non-stop, the sound of every punch, every flurry breaking the silence inside the gym.
It’s been this way the last few days, and it looks like there’s really nothing more and nothing left for Freddie Roach to do to make things better.
Pacquiao is a hundred percent ready for the the 5-foot-11 beast from Mexico, and if there indeed is such a thing as being 110 percent ready, then he is.
“Nakukulangan pa nga (And he even wants more),” added Neri of Pacquiao who just can’t get rid of this habit of always asking, begging for more in training.
“Kailangan pa pigilan (We need to restrain him),” Neri said.
The hardest part in training is over. Last Saturday, Pacquiao sparred 12 rounds, did nine on Tuesday, seven last Thursday, and will do five today, then three or four on Monday.
After the session with the mitts, Pacquiao busied himself with the double-end bag and speedball, and abdominal exercises. He shadow boxed to Sharika’s hit “Whenever, Wherever.”
He fooled around with friends who lined the ropes during breaks, and horsed around with his strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, then working on Amir Khan who was there to train.
Pacquiao sneaked from behind and with an open hand whacked Ariza on the buttocks.
You could feel the pain through Ariza’s face. He chased Pacquiao briefly inside the ring, blurting some unprintables, before retreating to a corner, bending over to soothe the pain.
It was child’s play between the world’s greatest boxer and the man who helped him get there.
Later on, inside the packed Thai restaurant just outside the Wild Card Gym, Ariza talked about Pacquiao’s readiness for the fight, and how it was like taking the hit from behind.
“He’s got heavy hands,” said Ariza.

Pacquiao Manny will fight Vs Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 for a vacant super welterweight championship, either in Las Vegas if Margarito can get licensed or in Monterrey, Mexico, if he can’t, promoter Bob Arum said.

That ends any possibility of a match between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., the top two boxers in the world, for 2010.

Arum said he decided to choose Margarito instead of Miguel Cotto, whom Pacquiao stopped in the 12th round in November, because it would be perceived as a more competitive bout. The bout will be offered on HBO Pay-Per-View.

“Cotto was beaten and even with [Hall of Fame trainer] Emanuel Steward now with him, I don’t think people believe that it’s enough to make a difference and I’m not sure they would buy it as competitive,” Arum said by telephone from his vacation home in Los Angeles. “But putting aside the controversy about the wraps, the one thing you know for sure with a Margarito fight is that it will be a hell of a fight for however long it lasts.

“Margarito knows only one way to fight and that’s coming forward. They’re going to get in there and fight. That’s what people want to see.”

Margarito’s hand-wrap controversy is no minor matter, however. He was caught with a hardened substance in his knuckle pad prior to a Jan. 24, 2009, fight in California against Shane Mosley.

He was forced to re-wrap his hands and was knocked out in the ninth round by Mosley. In February 2009, he was suspended for a year by the California State Athletic Commission.

He fought once since the Mosley fight, winning a lackluster unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia.

He applied for a license in Nevada on July 9, but by a 4-1 vote, the Nevada Athletic Commission tabled the matter and told Margarito to return to California. Arum said Margarito will file paperwork with California on Monday.

If Nevada grants Margarito a license, Arum said the fight would be in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. If not, it is all but certain to wind up at a 22,000-seat arena in Monterrey, Mexico, though a group from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is also bidding for the fight.

Skip Avansino, a member of the Nevada commission, said he thinks California regulators should consider it first, even though Margarito doesn’t plan to fight there. The California commission knows the matter best, Avansino said.

Avansino wasn’t willing to speculate what would occur if California were to decline taking up his request, given he doesn’t have a fight planned in the state.

“He certainly deserves a decision,” Avansino said. “I don’t know what procedures California will consider in connection with his reapplication. I would think that they would consider his application appropriately, just as we would, but I would want to wait until I see what California decides.”

Avansino said he wouldn’t be swayed by the huge economic impact the fight would have upon the depressed Las Vegas economy.

Pacquiao is a huge draw in Las Vegas and is one of the few boxers who attracts high-rolling Asian gamblers, who play $25,000-a-hand blackjack as well as baccarat. Las Vegas casinos had their best night in two years Nov. 14, 2009, when Pacquiao fought Cotto, because of the large influx of high-rollers who flooded Las Vegas, according to analysis by the Nevada Gaming Commission.

“I’m mindful of the economic conditions in the state of Nevada and I understand them well,” Avansino said. “I have every interest to improve and help improve the economy in this state. But as a commission, my responsibility is to protect the health and safety of those who compete in our state and to uphold the integrity of the sport. That’s my primary responsibility.”

The match would be for the World Boxing Council super welterweight championship. If Pacquiao Manny wins it, it would be either the seventh or eighth division in which he has held a title, depending upon how it is calculated.

He has won sanctioning body titles at 112, 122, 130, 135, 140 and 147 pounds. At 126 pounds, he beat Marco Antonio Barrera, who was the linear champion. But Barrera had surrendered all of his sanctioning body titles by the time he fought Pacquiao Manny, though he had not been beaten.

Manny Pacquiao has won a unanimous decision over Joshua Clottey in their WBO welterweight title fight, dominating the bout against a defensive opponent.

Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) controlled Saturday's fight from the start, throwing mostly body shots because Clottey locked his arms in front of his face. The Filipino never slowed throwing punches and Ghana's Clottey (35-4) never got very aggressive. Neither fighter went down.

Two judges scored it 119-109, the other 120-108.

A crowd of 50,994 attended at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Pacquiao is next hoping for a megafight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., presuming Mayweather beats Shane Mosley on May 1.

A. Peterson Battles in Texas March 12!

When undefeated DC lightweight Anthony Peterson travels to Texas on the weekend of March 12, it could prove to be a very big weekend. ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that Peterson (29-0, 19 KO's) will make his return to action on Friday, March 12 in Grapevine, TX in a 10-round bout against Juan Ramon Cruz of Puerto Rico (16-7-1, 12 KO's). Peterson has only fought once since injuring his knee in August of 2008, winning a 10-round unanimous decision against Luis Antonio Arceo on August 15, 2009.

Should Peterson win on March 12, he may travel to the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX the next evening to witness the matchup between Humberto Soto and David Diaz for the vacant WBC Lightweight title -- that's the co-feature on the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey card. Top Rank representative Carl Moretti told ESPN.com that a Peterson victory on the 12th would make him the mandatory challenger for the winner of Soto-Diaz, possibly in June.

In an interesting bit of irony, Edwin Valero vacated the WBC Lightweight title for a possible bout against Peterson's brother, Lamont.

Donaire on Pacquiao-Clottey: Pacman by KO

Nonito Donaire, Jr. agreed with trainer Freddie Roach that Filipino ring superstar Manny Pacquiao will hand Joshua Clottey the first knockout loss of his career when they lock mitts on March 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

The reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super-flyweight king conceded that Clottey is one tough customer but expressed belief Pacquiao will eventually wear the Ghanaian challenger down and blast him away.

“I hope Manny is not thinking that this is an easy fight. Clottey is big and has nothing to lose in this fight. But I really believe Manny will score a late-round stoppage since Clottey will feel the punches thrown by Manny late in the fight," Donaire said during Tuesday’s PSA Forum in Manila.

His observation echoed that of the outspoken Roach who has said that good chin notwithstanding, Clottey won’t last 12 rounds with Pacquiao.

“The Filipino Flash" recently easily retained his 115-lb belt via a third-round dismantling of Manuel Vargas of Mexico in a Las Vegas fight card witnessed by Pacquiao himself two weeks ago.

The Pacman, who is in the thick of training in Los Angeles, took the time out to grace the card to support Donaire and other Filipino bets Gerry Penalosa, Ciso Morales, Bernabe Concepcion and Mark Jason Melligen while aiming to solicit funding for sick fighter Z Gorres, who was at ringside that night.

Donaire is back in the Philippines to share his victory with his countrymen. He’s set to go on a motorcade around Manila on Wednesday, visit the recuperating Gorres in the latter’s hometown in Cebu, accept a major award from the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association (PSA) and tape episodes for Pacquiao’s GMA 7 sitcom “Show me da Manny."

He plans to be in the US by March 7 or 8 to start a more intensive training camp for his scheduled May 8 fight in Mexico City against a still undetermined rival and of course, cheer for Pacquiao against Clottey.

“I want to be in top shape because my opponent in my next fight will surely have more advantage than me with the fight to be held in Mexico. But I will give my best and make the country proud again," Donaire said.

The 26-year-old fighter is eyeing fights at higher weight classes (118 and even 122 lbs) possibly against Mexico's Fernando Montiel at bantam or Israel Vasquez or Rafael Marquez at super bantam.

He’s also considering a major bout at his current division – super-flyweight – possibly against old nemesis Vic Darchinyan or Jorge Arce.

I cannot underestimate Clottey, says champion Pacquiao

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - WBO welterweight title holder Manny Pacquiao, who has won world championships in eight divisions, said he would tread carefully when he faces Ghanaian Joshua Clottey in Dallas on March 13.

"Joshua Clottey is taller and bigger than me," Pacquiao told reporters in a conference call on Friday. "He is a former (IBF) champion. I cannot underestimate him."

Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, widely regarded as the two best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, had been scheduled to fight on March 13.

However, negotiations collapsed when the Filipino refused Mayweather's demands for Olympic-style dope testing procedures.

Pacquiao filed a lawsuit against Mayweather, the American's father Floyd Sr, his uncle Roger and Golden Boy Promotions for falsely accusing him of using performance-enhancing drugs.

"I believe Floyd Mayweather was not ready to fight me," said Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs). "That's why he makes some reasons to cancel the fight.

"I feel bad that he is accusing me of doing drugs, that he tries to ruin my name in boxing. I'm disappointed for what he's accusing me of but I'm not angry at him. That's his style."

After the collapse of the Mayweather fight, Pacquiao turned to Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs).

It is a fight Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach is confident his man will win.

"Clottey's a very strong guy, he's a good puncher," Roach said. "I think his best punch is the uppercut.

"But I have a lot of confidence in my fighter. He's sparring with guys who fight quite a bit like Clottey.

"We have big, strong guys and Manny's handling them with ease. I think we will overwhelm him and I think the fight will end before 12 rounds are over," added Roach.

"I think Manny will be the first to knock him out."

LAS VEGAS – Manny Pacquiao has always been willing to spill blood to win a fight. He's not nearly as eager to give blood to get a fight.

The fate of Pacquiao's planned March 13 megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. hangs in the balance. Both sides traded jabs Wednesday over Mayweather's insistence that the two submit to Olympic-style drug testing amid indications that both were open to a possible compromise.

With time running short, though, Pacquiao's promoter said he's not willing to negotiate much longer to make the fight.

"I think it's over tomorrow and we're going to another opponent if there is no agreement," promoter Bob Arum said. "It looks to me like they want a way out of the fight. Mayweather doesn't want to take a chance of losing."

A day after Mayweather's camp threatened to scuttle the fight unless the boxers were subject to random blood tests, Arum said his fighter would agree to just three blood tests. One would be done in January during the week the fight is formally announced, a second would be done no later than 30 days before the fight, and a final test would be done in the locker room afterward.

Arum also said the tests should be done by companies used by major sports leagues, like Major League Baseball and the NFL, something that so far is a major sticking point in the talks. Mayweather's camp wants the tests done by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which operates under much stricter rules that include random blood tests.

Arum accused Mayweather of trying to play mind games with Pacquiao, saying that the Filipino sensation has never failed urine tests for performance-enhancing substances.

"They want to put it in Manny's head that they can come in any time and take blood," Arum said. "Manny believes taking blood will weaken him. This is absolutely outrageous. Who does Floyd Mayweather think he is, the commissioner of boxing?"

Mayweather's promoter, Richard Schaefer, said he was willing to try and reach a consensus between the two sides. He cited comments by Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, that Pacquiao would agree to blood tests up to five days before the fight as possible middle ground.

"If we could agree to a 3-day cutoff I would try to sell that to my side," Schaefer said. "If Arum wants to walk away then he is going to be the one responsible for this fight falling apart."

Roach told The Associated Press on Tuesday night that he would not allow Pacquiao to be tested the day before the fight, but would agree to giving blood if there was a cutoff date.

"If they give me a 5-day window or something like that I have no problem with it," Roach said. "When they've drawn blood from Manny in the past he feels weaker for three or four days. It may be mental, but it's there."

The standoff over drug testing is the only issue still in the way of a fight that could be the richest ever. The two fighters earlier agreed to take equal purses, and earlier this week Mayweather's camp agreed to pay Pacquiao $10 million for each pound or fraction of a pound if the fighter does not make the 147-pound welterweight limit.

If the fight is held, it will be at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas. But with the magnitude of the fight's promotion and the need for the fighters to set up training schedules, there isn't a lot of time left to reach an agreement.

The demand by Mayweather for the USADA to administer an Olympic-style testing program for the two fighters beginning with the contract signing goes far beyond any testing done by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Boxers have their urine tested before and after fights and occasionally in training, but there are no blood tests for things like human growth hormone that can't be detected in urine.

Schaefer, who with former boxer Oscar De La Hoya runs Golden Boy Promotions, said that if Mayweather was trying to get out of the fight he would have walked when Pacquiao's camp demanded the $10 million weight clause in the contract. He said he didn't think 8 to 12 urine tests and 3 to 5 blood tests before a fight was unreasonable.

"Manny Pacquiao probably thinks it's going to be some nurse with a big needle sucking out a gallon of blood and leaving him lying on the floor for a week," Schaefer said.

Nothing could be further from the truth, said USADA executive director Travis Tygart, who promised that any testing his agency did would not affect the outcome of the fight.

"What we do and have been doing in no way impacts any athlete's ability to compete," Tygart said.

LOS ANGELES – So who’s next for Manny Pacquiao?

Well, at least for now, he’s got Ricky Hatton to his left, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. to his right.

And all Pacquiao has to do is choose.

Pacquiao, fresh from his eight-round destruction of Oscar de la Hoya at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, said Sunday that the Mayweather camp had sent feelers about a possible fight with the Filipino superstar.

“They sent a message to us that if I beat De la Hoya, he will come out of retirement to face me,” said Pacquiao, referring to Mayweather who suddenly retired after beating De la Hoya and Hatton last year.

But following Pacquiao’s unbelievable win that pushed De la Hoya closer to retirement, there are calls for another big match, another dream match against Mayweather, the former pound-for-pound champion.

Pacquiao now wears that billing, and a fight with Mayweather, sometime in May or June, will be another great night of boxing.

But Hatton wants to face Pacquiao, too, and also offers a huge opportunity at 140 pounds. Pacquiao said he’s also willing to face the British superstar even if it means fighting him at the Wembley Stadium in England.

But whoever it is, Pacquiao should be in for another huge payday.

“Whoever is fine. You know me,” said Pacquiao inside his customized bus as he travelled four hours to get back to Los Angeles. He took the front seat with his pregnant wife Jinkee and was joined by relatives and friends.

“Are there any more Mexicans out there? I think Zorro is the only one left,” said the fighter who has beaten some of the great fighters from Mexico - Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Looking back at the fight against De la Hoya, Pacquiao said his speed, and good head and body movement enabled him to take away De la Hoya’s jab, and that made it easier for him in dominating his taller opponent.

“He couldn’t move anymore because I was so fast. And each time he threw his jab, I countered. That’s what we trained for - how to counter. I was a moving target and it was very difficult for him to catch me,” he added.

Pacquiao said he was only worried about his head because he knew De la Hoya’s jab and left hook are one of the best in the sport, and that he was never worried getting hit in the body.

“Imagine, I did 2,500 sit-ups a day so I didn’t have to worry about my body. De la Hoya worried about both his head and body. That’s why he looked so scared each time I hit him. I heard him moan after I hit him once in the body,” he remembered.

“Para siyang kandilang unti-unting nau-upos,” Pacquiao said.

The Filipino champion thought that it would have been over in the ninth round if De la Hoya got up his stool to answer the bell because he knew he had him, and that’s what his trainer Freddie Roach told him.

“Manny, this is it. Finish him off. Knock him out. You’ve got him,” he was told during the break.

And so he said he was surprised when he saw De la Hoya walking toward him, thinking he was charging at him until he saw his cornermen signaling the end of the fight.

Pacquiao said he felt that at 148 1⁄2, his weight when he climbed the ring against De la Hoya, he was even faster when he fought David Diaz for the WBC lightweight (135 lbs) crown only last June.

“Imagine, I’ve jumped and fought in three weight divisions this year,” he said, reminding everyone that last March he also defeated Marquez for the WBC super-featherweight (130 lbs) title.

Pacquiao said that after the fight, he received a phone call from Diaz, and he was surprised with what he said.

“Oh, man. You’re unbelievable. What kind of human (being) are you. You were so fast,” Pacquiao remembered Diaz as telling him.

MANILA, Philippines - The recent welterweight megafight between Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and Puerto Rican WBO champion Miguel Cotto is expected to generate close to 2 million pay-per-view buys.

“They’re very good,” said Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in an interview with Boxingtalk.com., referring to the PPV figures. “Yeah, it’s well over one million but I really don’t know. It will be somewhere north of one million.”

Rey Colón of the “El Vocero” of Puerto Rico reported that the fight, which Pacquiao won via a convincing 12th round TKO, made approximately two million pay-per-view buys generating at least $120 million in revenues.

No word on what Pacquiao´s cut will be but Cotto was mentioned to be making at least $10 million. (Related story on Page 21)

Pacquiao had a guaranteed purse of $13 million in the Cotto fight.

Arum has earlier indicated that he had “pretty much the final numbers” for Puerto Rico alone which he said “set a record” by surpassing the previous record of 80,000 for the Felix “Tito” Trinidad-Oscar De La Hoya fight.

MANILA (AFP) - – Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday brushed off rumours his marriage was on the rocks amid reports the Philippine boxing superstar flew a starlet to Las Vegas to watch him win a record seventh world title.

In an interview aired over local television station ABS-CBN as he prepared to fly home to a hero's welcome after taking Miguel Cotto's World Boxing Organisation welterweight title in Las Vegas, the Pacman sidestepped the issue.

Pacquiao, 30, instead admonished the local press to report his achievements in the ring, "not the private lives of people".

"I hope they honour the achievements that I have won for my fellow Filipinos," he said.

The glow from Saturday's one-sided contest has been partly tarnished by reports that Pacquiao stayed in a different hotel from his wife, Jinkee, with whom he has three children, while they were in the United States.

According to the reports, the champ paid for the air tickets and hotel accommodation of Filipina starlet Krista Ranillo, who watched the bout live with her own family, helping fuel rumours of a romantic liaison.

"Let us avoid what I call our crab mentality. I am appealing to all of you to avoid that. Let us unite so we will all be happy," Pacquiao said in the TV interview.

He was referring to a saying that many use to explain widespread poverty in the Philippines, drawing an analogy with Filipinos and crabs trapped in a vat.

As one crab tries to claw its way out, others beneath it try to pull it back down to their own level.

Pacquiao, who claimed a historic seventh world title in as many weight divisions with Sunday's victory over Cotto, is no stranger to controversy surrounding his private life.

He had earlier been forced to deny reports of a romantic involvement with another Philippine film star, Ara Mina, after the two were photographed dancing the night away at an up-scale Manila nightclub.

Krista Ranillo flatly denies Pacquiao, pregnancy rumors

Sexy actress Krista Ranillo has categorically denied romantic involvement with boxing champ Manny Pacquiao in a chat interview aired on GMA-7's "24 Oras," Nov. 18.

"I'm still with Dom," said Krista, referring to her boyfriend-director Dominic Zapata.

Krista added that she is aware of the issue romantically linking her to Manny but she refused to elaborate for now.

"We're still discussing when and how we would speak [about the issue]," she said.

In a text message sent to GMA-7, Zapata neither confirmed nor denied that he and Krista are still lovers.

According to the website celebritynations.tv, the video was downloaded last Nov. 3.

It also stated that Jinkee arrived in the US last Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, on "TV Patrol World,"a report said that Manny only gave the American press five minutes to interview him after his bout with Cotto; this, despite the press having waited for him for four hours..

More, the media were told before the interview not to ask anything about Manny's private life..

The report added that Krista's supposed guest appearance on several shows in the area were cancelled because of Manny's directive about discussing his private life in public.

LAS VEGAS – Manny Pacquiao staked his claim atop boxing’s mythical throne as the pound-for-pound best, using his lightning hand speed to beat and batter Miguel Cotto into submission Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Pacquiao knocked Cotto down once in the third round and again in the fourth, pummeled him repeatedly and easily lifted the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt from the Puerto Rican with a 12th-round stoppage. The time was 55 seconds into the final round, as referee Kenny Bayless leaped between the fighters to save Cotto a more savage beating and ignominious end.

Cotto came out strong and landed some hard punches, but Cotto couldn’t deal with the speed. Pacquiao was landing three shots for every two Cotto did early. After the knockdown in the fourth, Cotto’s offense was nonexistent as he spent most of the last two thirds of the fight fending off Pacquiao’s onslaught.

Cotto landed in single digits in power shots in every round from the fifth forward.

Pacquiao nearly had the stoppage after the 11th when Cotto trainer Joe Santiago walked onto the ring apron and waved his hand at Bayless.

It appeared he was going to stop the fight, but then Bayless and ringside physician James Game spoke and allowed it to continue. It was only extending the misery as Pacquiao poured it on in the 12th.

When the fight ended, the crowd began to chant, “We want Floyd!” It was a reference to Floyd Mayweather Jr., the other man with a claim to the top of the boxing pound-for-pound list.

Pacquiao, who has won championship belts in five divisions and beat the linear champion in two others, can no longer be knocked as a small man who was beating washed up fighters.

In Cotto, he took on an elite and powerful welterweight whose only loss came under suspicious circumstances to Antonio Margarito last year. There is suspicion that Margarito’s gloves were loaded for that fight, though it has never been proven.

But Pacquiao proved he was able to not only take a welterweight punch, but rock him repeatedly. It was a magnificent performance and will create public demand for a fight with Mayweather.

“I want to see him fight Mayweather,” Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said.

Santiago said Pacquiao hit harder and was stronger than expected. Cotto injured his left shoulder in the eighth.

By Manuel Perez: Manny Pacquiao will be trying to make boxing history on November 14th by winning seven world titles in seven different weight divisions when he steps in the ring with WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cotto, 29, will have his World Boxing Organization title on the line despite the fight being held at a 145 pound catch weight for the bout, a move to make it a tad easier for Pacquiao to match up with the talented Puerto Rican fighter.

It’s sad that there has to be a catch weight for this fight, because it taints the bout in my eyes. How can a title be on the line when the fight is being held at a catch weight? I have no problem with the made up Diamond belt being on the line considering that it was designed at the spur of the moment just for this type of occasion. But the WBO title shouldn’t be on the line unless the fight is being held at the full 147 pound limit of the welterweight division.
Never the less, the title will be on the line for this fight and there’s nothing Cotto can do about it other than beat Pacquiao black and blue and send him packing. Pacquiao needs to forget about trying to pick up belts and should focus more on picking up his teeth after this fight is over with. Pacquiao has bit off more than he can chew by moving up in weight to fight Miguel Cotto.

This isn’t a shot Oscar De La Hoya or a Ricky Hatton fighting in a primitive caveman style against him. This is a skilled fighter still in his prime and ready to take Pacquiao’s head clean off his shoulders. Cotto is going to rip into Pacquiao and bust him, cause both eyes to bleed, his nose to leak blood everywhere and color his trunks a bright red for this fight. I just hope that Pacquiao can stay standing long enough for Cotto to finish the beating without Pacquiao bowing out of it quickly.

Pacquiao may be going into this fight hoping to get a 7th world title, but he’ll come out of it with by far the worst beating of his career, one that will cause him to think seriously about retiring from boxing. Pacquiao may pick up a 7th title in the future if he sticks around after this fight and finds an easier mark to fight, but he won’t be getting any 7th title in this fight.

What Pacquiao will be getting is bloodied and battered in the worst way. I rarely feel sorry for a fighter when they’re taking a beating, but I think I’ll feel bad for Pacquiao if Cotto takes him apart too badly in this fight. I don’t want Pacquiao to be torn apart by the hard punching Cotto. I just want him beaten badly enough to the point where Pacquiao understands that he’s over reached the potential of his body.

Every fighter much know their potential, and for Pacquiao he’s going to find out his limit against Cotto on November 14th. After they carry Pacquiao out of the ring on a stretcher, Pacquiao may rethink his desire for a 7th world title.

Who knows, maybe one of the boxing organizations can create another special made up title for Pacquiao to fight for against one of the smaller, weaker fighters so that he can try to get his 7th world title that way. But I don’t see it happening against Cotto nor any of the other welterweight champions unless they’re forced to fight at some god awful catch weight of 140 or less

Miguel Cotto has some strong words for Manny Pacquaio

Miguel Cotto appears to be confident and focused just days away from the biggest fight of his career against the pride of the Philippines. Far from being intimidated by the prospect of facing a six weight champion, Cotto feels he isn't getting enough respect as a great fighter in his own right.

Claims from Freddie Roach that his first loss had hit him hard were rebuffed by Cotto, who responded:

“Why don’t you ask Manny that question because he has had three losses I have just one,”

“Sometimes when you lose you win. Since Margarito great things have come to my career.

“This is the problem,” Cotto said. “Freddie Roach is not the guy who is going to climb into the ring. If he prepares Manny for just nine rounds then he has three more rounds.

“He (Roach) can say whatever he wants. One day he says the first round and the next day he says round seven.

“He (Pacquaio) can fight Mayweather as many times as he wants after I beat him,” Cotto said.

Whether this confidence will transfer well into the ring when the fight starts is another matter, but if nothing else, Cotto will come at Pacquaio with everything he has. The real decider of the fight will be how well Pac-man's power has translated into yet another weight class, and whether Cotto can hurt Manny with his famous body punching. Many people thought Ricky Hatton would provide a similar test for Pacquaio, but a sloppy defence and a great game plan from Freddie Roach saw him blasted out in the early rounds.

Most still think Manny's march towards a showdown with the other pound for pound claimant Floyd Mayweather will continue, and that he will run right through Cotto. Certainly the odds have Cotto as an underdog, but this wouldn't be the first time that he has been counted out and won anyway.

LOS ANGELES — To pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, size really doesn't matter.
The Filipino boxing hero, gearing up for a world title clash with Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto that could give Pacquiao a slice of boxing history, said he doesn't put much stock in those who say Cotto's superior size could prove too much.

"I have heard that a couple of times the past two years," Pacquiao said with a smile Wednesday, as reporters, photographers and TV cameramen jammed Hollywood's WildCard boxing club to see him train.

After all, Pacquiao's most recent victories have come against bigger opponents. Admittedly Oscar De La Hoya was past his prime when Pacquiao stopped him in the eighth round in December of 2008.

On May 2, Pacquiao knocked out Britain's Ricky Hatton in the second round of their junior welterweight clash.

"It's not about comparing size, not about comparing power," Pacquiao insisted. "Knowledge is power. You don't have knowledge, you don't have power."

Pacquiao handed Hatton his first defeat at junior welterweight. He claimed the International Boxing Organization belt to match a ring record with a title in a sixth career weight class.

Pacquiao secured his place among boxing's all-time greats, adding the junior welterweight crown to past world titles at lightweight, super featherweight, junior featherweight, featherweight and flyweight.

With the hard-hitting Cotto's World Boxing Organizagion welterweight belt on the line in a bout to be fought at 145 pounds, Pacquiao could capture an outright record by claiming a title in a seventh weight division.

"If I win it's boxing history - seven titles in seven different weight divisions," Pacquiao said. "I would be so proud - being a Filipino who captured titles in seven weight divisions."

Pacquiao's prowess in the ring has made him a hero in his homeland, and his victories over De La Hoya and Hatton have raised his profile in the United States.

This week, he appeared on US television's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" programme, impressing with his singing performance.

It wasn't such a big departure for a man who has appeared on television and in film in the Philippines, where he is also a sought-after product pitchman and a budding politician who plans to run for a seat in the nation's parliament in next year's elections.
Pacquiao also took some time out last month to devote himself to humanitarian work in the wake of a devastating typhoon in his homeland.

The Filipino ring icon is the latest fighter to make it to the list of professional boxers to be featured in the cover of well-respected magazine Time — and only the second non-heavyweight fighter to do so.

This also makes Pacquiao the second Filipino to grace Time’s cover after former President and democracy icon Corazon Aquino, who was named the magazine’s "Woman of the Year" in 1986.

Apart from heavyweights Louis, Schmeling, Frazier, Ali and middleweight Robinson, other boxers who had made it to the magazine’s cover include heavyweights Jack Dempsey, Primo Carnerra, Gene Tunney and the controversial Mike Tyson.

In its latest Asia edition issue, Time pays homage to the General Santos City-based southpaw in a story titled “The Meaning of Manny,” which branded the Filipino spitfire as “the latest savior of boxing.”

Amir Khan has his routine at the Wild Card Gym, Freddie’s Roach’s Hollywood training base. He runs, he goes on the pads, then he spars in the afternoon. The plan is laid out by Roach, thousands of miles away.

Before his last two fights, Khan has had his mobile phone confiscated by Roach so that the many friends of the British fighter leaves him in peace. Right now, that mobile phone is a direct line of instruction from The Philippines to Los Angeles.

Khan revealed in the last few hours that he speaks daily with Roach who gives him his training routine. Roach is in Baguio City where he is in camp with Filipino idol Manny Pacquiao, in phase one of their training ahead of the November 14 meeting with Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas. Pacquiao and Roach return to the Wild Card in eight days’ time.

Khan said yesterday that he eagerly awaits the return, next week, of Roach and Pacquiao to the heat of LA. He also insisted that there is no better way for him to prepare for his next fight – his first defence of the WBA light-welterweight title, against Dmitry Salita in the northern UK city of Newcastle on Dec 5, than by being around and inside the buzz generated by Pacquiao and his entourage.

Khan is thrilled by the continued sparring he has had with Pacquiao. “I can still mature, I’m at 80 per cent at the moment in terms of the fighter I can be. I’m still only 22. I’ll hit my peak at 23, 24, my body is still going to develop. I’m working with one of the best coaches in the world and I’m sparring with one of the best fighters in the world. It can only make me better and better. I want to be the best fighter in the [140lb] division.”

“Training is going really well. I got into shape quickly, but we want to peak at the right time. Training has gone really well. Freddie will be back in LA soon, with Manny. At the moment, we speak daily about what I need to do, who I need to work with at the gym. For me, it’s nice to get away from home in England and back to working on the game again.”

Khan also insisted that the move from lightweight to light-welterweight, a step up of 5 lbs, has made a huge difference to him. “I feel so much stronger at light welterweight. Those 5 lbs make a huge difference. At lightweight I was not as strong walking into the fight.”

Frank Warren, Khan’s promoter, played down suggestions that Khan could face another British prospect, John Murray, soon. “The WBA ordered the mandatory defence, against Dmitry Salita. Murray had an offer many months ago, but he never got back. This is bigger fight with Salita, Murray is a lightweight. With the greatest respect to Murray,

Amir is getting a lot of interest from the States. He is trained by one of best trainers of this generation in Freddie Roach, you’ve heard what Manny Pacquiao says about him, and Amir will get better and better.”

Khan insisted he was ready to get back to work. “I had a long break, I wanted to get in early, to work on things. I’m working with Freddie’s assistant, and by the time he comes, I’ll be ready to go on the pads and to spar with him…Freddie has a game plan for me to follow…Salita is a tough, durable guy and wants to take the title away from me.”

The fight has been built up in some quarters as the first world title fight for some time between a Jew and a Muslim. Salita, born in Ukraine but raised in Brooklyn, is a devout Jew. Khan said: “We are pro sportsman, regardless of our religion. We respect each other’s religion but it has nothing to do with our sporting contest. We both want to win. Every fight I am getting better and better, and against this guy I am expecting a tough fight, and a long night.”

Roach, meanwhile, speaking from The Philippines, enthuses over his young charge: “Amir’s at the gym right now, his sparring is all set up for him. Salita is a good boxer, not a big puncher. But Amir is a better boxer, and getting better all the time.”

Unable to run, Pacquiao trains in the pool instead

BAGUIO CITY -- Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao has taken up swimming to make up for the road work he has lost to the weather.

“For the last eight years I’ve been trying to get Manny in the pool,” Roach told the Philippine Daily Inquirer yesterday. “With the rain here we finally got him in the pool.”

Pacquiao has missed days of road work due to intermittent rains here. The experience may have not been pleasant for Pacquiao but overall, Roach believes his prized ward has acknowledged the positive effect of it.

“He swallowed a lot of chlorine but he learned to swim quite quickly,” said Roach. “I think I actually liked it overall because when he started to work out he realized how hard it was.”

Pacquiao’s date with the pool last Friday lasted for 26 minutes.

Roach expects Pacquiao to be sore in the muscles and that, added the trainer, comes with the territory.

“It’s like weightlifting but it doesn’t make you tight and slow so it’s a really a wonderful workout. I think we’ll get him back there again,” added Roach.

Roach has been urging his fighters to make swimming a part of their regimen and most, if not all of them realized its many benefits.

Meanwhile, former WBC lightweight king Jose Luis Castillo is set to arrive today here via a private plane to begin sparring sessions with Pacquiao, who is preparing for his November 14 bout with Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Castillo arrived Friday but had to stay in Manila as all roads to and from this city remains impassable.

Pacquiao’s other two sparring mates are Shawn Porter and Urbano Antillon, and in the recent week, he has had mixed results with the two.

“Shawn and Urbano pretty evened up with Manny, but last Thursday Manny dominated both,” said Roach.

In other developments, Team Pacquiao is reportedly planning to leave for the US earlier than the planned October 24 schedule because the storm that hit this vacation capital recently has caused a lot of hitches in training.

Cotto vs Pacquiao: Miguel Cotto Tampa Florida 1st Week of Training - In fulfilling the first week of their training in Tampa, Miguel Cotto trains to full steam for his defense of the WBO welterweight championship against Manny Pacquiao on November 14.

Cotto's trainer, Joe Santiago, said they were satisfied with the work of the first two sessions of sparring.

"We are in our second home and everything goes to plan. The boy (hired to spar with Cotto) is an excellent resource. He knows to do his job very well," said Santiago.

"He is left-handed and fast as Pacquiao... looks like a lot," he added. "If there is any difference, is that he has more defense than Pacquiao. Cotto has done well (with the left-handed position of the rival). We were already working with some sparring we had in Puerto Rico before coming here."

In the coming weeks, according to Santiago, the workload will intensify until about the last week of October, when the day approaches to travel to Las Vegas.

"In those last weeks, we will bring two more guys to spar, to come fresh and force him to use the effort we are looking for those days that help us prepare for the 12 rounds," said Santiago.

"If it ends before, then so be it, but we'll go with the necessary condition to fight with intensity for 12 rounds."

Speaking of condition, Santiago guaranteed that Cotto will mark to the 145 pounds on the official weigh day, rejecting the arguments of Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach. In the Philippines, Roach predicted that Cotto might mark pounds over the agreed weight as happened to Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. Roach also said that the fight contract included an agreement to ease the penalty if he weighed more.

"That's not true," said Santiago. "And Cotto, no doubt, will weigh 145 pounds," he said.

Pacquiao mourns Nazario's death

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao carried a heavy heart to the gym and went through with his normal routine despite the death of his former business manager and mentor in life, Rodolfo “Mang Rod” Nazario, yesterday.

Nazario passed away at 8:50 a.m. at the Perpetual Help Hospital in Las Piñas where he’s been confined days after celebrating his 74th birthday last Sept. 12. He died after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

Nazario’s family was at the hospital when the final bell rang on the luminous figure in Philippine boxing.

Pacquiao learned of Nazario’s death through a text message from a mutual friend, Gerry Garcia, who along with Moy Lainez, Lito Mondejar and Nazario formed part of the original Team Pacquiao.

Pacquiao was inside his hotel suite in Baguio City, just hours after doing his morning run, when he received the sad news. At around 1 p.m., he went to the second floor of the Cooyeesan Hotel and trained in the boxing gym.Roger Fernandez, younger brother of Pacquiao’s trainer, Buboy Fernandez, said while there was a pall of gloom inside the gym, the world’s hottest boxer today went through with the usual stuff under Freddie Roach.

Pacquiao said he felt like losing a family member when he spoke to The STAR at around 10 a.m.

“Nalulungkot ako sa balita (I am saddened by the news),” were the first words that came out of his mouth. He said he can’t wait to travel to Manila to be at Nazario’s wake. That could come on Sunday, his rest day.

“Bababa ako (I’m coming down),” he said.

Pacquiao trained at the Wild Card Gym, which Nazario owns, in Parañaque last Friday and upon hearing that Nazario was confined at the hospital, he took time to visit his former boss that same afternoon and the morning after.

Little did Pacquiao know that that would be the last time he’d be with Nazario.

“Akala ko malakas pa siya nung araw na ‘yun (I thought he was still strong that day),” said Pacquiao in a slow voice one could easily feel he was hurting deep inside.

“Napansin ko sa ospital na lumuluha siya habang kausap ako kaya pinunasan ko pa nga ang luha niya (I noticed in the hospital that he was in tears as he talked to me. I even had to wipe them off),” said Pacquiao.

He said those tears rolled down Nazario’s face for different reasons.

“Baka nahihirapan na din o natutuwa siya na nandun ako (Maybe he was struggling or he was happy I was there),” Pacquiao said over the phone.

“We talked about the (Miguel) Cotto fight. Sabi niya sa akin ‘kaya mo yan basta gumalaw ka lang ng gumalaw (He told me ‘you can handle him as long as you keep on moving’),’” said Pacquiao.

“And he also reminded me not to be over-confident,” he added.

The STAR thought it was time to hang up but Pacquiao just went on with kind words for his business manager from 1995 to 2005. It was Nazario who first brought him to the US for the breakthrough fight with Lehlo Ledwaba in 2001.

“Yon nga ang huling kita ko sa kaniya. Ang sabi niya pa hindi na daw siya makakapunta sa Las Vegas sa laban kaya sa TV na lang siya manonood (That was the last time I saw him. And he told me he won’t be there for the fight and he’d just watch on TV),” he said.

“Nalulungkot talaga ako dahil sa kanya ako nag-simula. Kung wala siya, wala din ako. Madami siyang pangaral na binigay sa akin (I’m sad because I started out with him. If not for him I won’t be here. I learned a lot from him),” he went on.

Pacquiao said Nazario even requested him to include super-flyweight Eden Sonsona, a relative of newly crowned WBO super-flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona, to be in his Nov. 14 card with Cotto.

“Gagawin ko yan (I will do that),” he said.

Pacquiao was asked if he ever felt letting Nazario down.

“Hindi naman siguro. Sigurado ako napasaya ko rin siya at naging proud din siya sa akin (I don’t think so. I’m sure I made him happy, too. And I made him proud of me),” he said.

Last Aug. 14, Pacquiao visited Nazario at his gym for the anniversary of the boxing program “In This Corner” and on that day it was the elder who presented the 30-year-old boxer, a chess buff, a special gift.

It was a rare 1856 chess set, made in Russia, and which Nazario bought in Orlando years ago for a thousand dollars.

“Itatago ko ito. Kapag naglaban tayo ulit, talo ka na (I would cherish this. If we play (chess) again, you’d lose),” Pacquiao told Nazario.

That rematch will have to wait for now.

Conditioning coach Alex Ariza said Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has become stronger than he was when he fought former junior welterweight champion Ricky â€œThe Hitmanâ€� Hatton 5 months ago.

In a report posted on sports Website Insidesports.ph, Ariza said Pacquiao â€œlooked good and strongâ€� with six weeks left before the November 14 â€œFire Powerâ€� showdown with WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

Although Ariza admitted that the Filipino champ had problems in his first sparring session with undefeated light middleweight Shawn Porter, he said Pacquiao recovered quickly and â€œhas been on track ever sinceâ€�.

Pacquiao is currently undergoing training in Baguio City.

Ariza, who helped Pacquiao improve in terms of his power and explosiveness, explained that the Filipino boxer is gradually improving because of his â€œmuscle memoryâ€�.

â€œThe body and the muscles have memory so heâ€™s just reverting back to what it used to be but a little faster than we had in the past. Thatâ€™s all it is. It remembers where it was in the Hatton fight and is getting right back,â€� he said.

In fact, Ariza thinks Pacquiao even looks stronger than he was for the Hatton fight where the Filipino knocked the Brit out of his senses in Round 2.

â€œ[Pacquiao] is stronger, is faster than he was in the past,â€� he said, stressing that â€œif we could hold it here until we get to America and we can hold that weight we will be right on track.â€�

Pacquiao plans to defeat Cotto in an attempt to win a seventh title in seven different weight classes. Their title showdown will take place at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
